I
very much enjoyed my holiday in Greece with Tim. We
went by ferry from Athens to the island of Santorini
located in the most southern part of the Cyclades in
the Aegean Sea. The present-day crescent shape of the
island is a consequence of the activity of volcanic
action in prehistoric times feeding the myth of the
lost Atlantis. Santorini is essentially what remains
of an enormous volcanic explosion dated back 3,600 years
and which created the current geological caldera; a
giant central lagoon, more or less rectangular, and
measuring about 12 by 7 km (7.5 by 4.3 mi), surrounded
by 300 m (980 ft) high steep cliffs on three sides.
Donkeys
are a popular means of transport in Santorini. They are
able to climb the steps that connect the old port with
Fira town some carrying people on their backs and others
loaded with luggage.
The
ride up the steep cliffs allows one to experience a unique
both donkey riding and at the same time enjoying a great
view to the caldera of Santorini. Being cute and friendly
yet strong and fit enough to climb the steps.

They are considered to be a picturesque symbol of Santorini
that is strictly connected to the traditions of the island.
George
told me that he was a student in Vancouver, British Columbia,
Canada and that he was in Greece recovering from the breakdown
of a previous relationship. We wandered the beaches, we
swam together, we went out to the bars and we wandered
in all the vibrant places. We both wished that we didn't
live so far apart but we were mature enough to enjoy each
other's company and treat it as a holiday romance. We
kept in touch with the odd letter on Christmas card for
a couple of years.
