The Fjord: Milford Sound.

Thursday 11thJanuary.
Rose 0630 and left at 0700. Took a few pics on the way to Te Anau. Arr 0900 and left my bag at B & B then at 0930 went on to Milford Sound stopping on the way at the mirror lakes etc. The tunnel was pitch black and I thought my headlights had failed.

I arrived at 1120 and parked my car in the car park near the booking office.

The water was like a sheet of glass as I wandered along the harbour
03milford.jpg
toward the 'Mariner' which was not yet ready to sail.
04milford.jpg
Milford Sound viewing Mitre Peak and that magnificent fjord. I purchased a ticket for $53 and boarded the cruise ship Mariner at 1230.

I was chatting to one of the passengers, Chen, from Israeli who asked me to e-mail this photograph to him.

The boat sliced through the calm waters as we passed the high cliffs and waterfalls on the shore.
07milford.jpg
The visitors some with binoculars others with cameras enjoyed the scenery
08milford.jpg
as they took in the wide panoramic views of the fjord.
09milford.jpg
Lovely cruise but a cold wind blew on outward leg.

Sean from England came to visit his New Zealand girlfriend and she was taking him on a tour of her country.
11milford.jpg
We passed some seals on the rocks,
12milford.jpg
so the captain took as closer in order that we could get a better view of them.
13milford.jpg
little movement as they lay basking in the warm sunshine.
14milford.jpg
Here we can see some seals feeding in the clear waters.
15milford.jpg
Not all the travellers looked happy.
16milford.jpg
Great scenery and very high hills some of them are 3000m.
17milford.jpg
We came close enough to the Bowen falls to feel the fine spray from the crashing waters
18milford.jpg
as they tumbled from the cliffs so high above.
19milford.jpg
During the return journey we had Lunch on board.
20milford.jpg
Then enjoyed the cruise back to the harbour.
21milford.jpg
It was warmer and on the return and I was rewarded with alternative scenery.

There was nothing to do in Milford Sound so I drove back leaving at 1515 and arriving at Te Anau two hours later where I stopped off to have a venison steak at Keplers restaurant. I very much enjoyed the day and by the time I was settled in was quite happy to then spend a quiet evening on laptop in the lounge.
