Soon though he was posted to Cyprus and I spent the next eight months writing and receiving love letters at Winchester where I was staying after my discharge from Her Majesty's Service. When John left the Army we found a bedsitter and lived together in Enmonton, a suburb in the north east of London.

I was training to be a hairdresser and went daily to a hairdressing school in Enfield. John who had been used to clerical work in the army found himself employment as a clerk in some Company in the city. The only writing I have from John is on this photo we had taken.

We parted as a result of John's having sexual experiences with other people. I was young and did not know how to handle my jealousy so we terminated our relationship acrimoniously. A few years later I was informed by a mutual friend that shortly after our split he'd not got over me and had regretted his promiscuos behaviour so he committed suicide with an overdose of barbituates.
