4th February 2002. I ate a couple of boiled eggs with some toast and drank coffee before leaving home at 0730. It was a long slow journey to Sydenham, and I was concerned about not being able to get in touch with Paul. I had no idea whether he would turn up on time or not. However, I saw him outside Peter's house as I pulled up at 0820 and felt very much relieved. Peter, my friend who was going to drive us to the airport, was already at the door so we transferred the luggage and left straight away. After a long slow journey we arrived at Heathrow at 1010. No sooner had the got out of the car than the rain started to fall. After checking in our baggage we went to have some breakfast before going to the departure lounge. Once there I purchased Benson & Hedges. Phil and Valerie like Bailie's so I bought a couple of bottles for them. Air Jamaica has a reputation for bad time keeping and today was no exception. On this occasion we left half an hour late. As usual I read for a while, the food was pretty terrible, and then slept for most of the journey.

We arrived at the Sir Donald Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay around 1900, an hour later than scheduled. We were met at the airport by Vin,a friend of the family, who'd contracted to take us the two-hour drive into Petersville.
